Nerdiest Thing About Me

In celebration of Cassie Mae's new book HOW TO DATE A NERD, I've joined her blog hop - The Nerdiest Thing About Me. Before I get to that stunning revelation, I want to tell you a little about Cassie's new book.

Zoe has a great pair of legs, perky boobs, and wears exactly what she needs to show it all off. She works hard for the easy sleazy ‘you only wish you were me’ reputation, burying who she really is—an all-out nerd.

The only time Zoe gets to be herself is when she hides under her comforter to read X-Men comics, sending jealousy stabs at everyone who attends Comic-Con. Keeping up her popular rep is too important, and she’s so damn insecure to care about the consequences. But when Zoe’s sister takes her car for a ‘crash and burn into a tree’ joyride, her parents get her a replacement. A manual. Something she doesn’t know how to operate, but her next door neighbor Zak sure as heck does.

Zak’s a geek to the core, shunned by everyone in school for playing Dungeons and Dragons at lunch and wearing “Use the Force” t-shirts. And Zoe’s got it bad for the boy. Only Zak doesn’t want Popular Zoe. He wants Geek Zoe.

So - what's the nerdiest thing about me? Where to start? Obviously I'm a book nerd - any writer worth their salt is obsessed by books. (Side Note: "What is a nerd?" My nine year old daughter asked me recently. "A nerd is someone who is passionate about something and doesn't care what other people think of their passion." "Oh. I thought it was something bad." "NO!," I said. "I'm a nerd about books and music," I told her. This did not convince her.)

But I think I'm AM music nerd. I listen to a lot of music. Music is my poetry (not knocking poetry here.) I have trouble doing work - paid or writing - without some kind of soundtrack. I know there's a great divide with writers as to whether they can write with music or with silence better. I am not a silent type of writer.

The nerdy part I can describe two ways. First, when we were drafting names (in an Excel document. See? I told you I was a nerd) for our first daughter, I was brainstorming with my husband. I said to him, "Do you like 'Charlotte'?" because it was on my maybe list. He immediately said, "Sometimes." Which made me love him even more than I did before. Because Charlotte Sometimes is a great Cure song and we are music nerds.

Second illustration of my music nerdery. Husband and I don't get to go out much but every so often a movie comes out that we move heaven and earth (and shovel cash at our babysitter) to go and see together. This summer that movie was THE WORLD'S END. At the climactic end, against an old school goth soundtrack - I nearly had an aneurysm of joy. Because I'm a nerd.

  1. I'm probably a music nerd too. I love musicals and finding new music and I've even expanded my listening to Korean pop music. A little weird, but I'm always looking for the next wave in music. So, I get that :)

    1. the amazing part is there is SO much good music out there - different music from what's possible. I'm just happy that people are listening - no matter how weird - to anything out of the ordinary. Korean pop music sounds cool. Also sounds like a cool trait to give a character ;)

  3. Fun--I majored in music in college and consider myself a type of music nerd too, and it means being able to appreciate something about almost everything I hear. (I'm a "silence" writer, though. Music is too distracting.) Hooray for music nerdery!

    1. My brother in law is like that. He's a musician and plays in all kinds of bands (rock, jazz, classical) and he's also a composer of musicals. It blows my mind when he starts talking, not just about what he likes but how that music is made. I'm not that level of nerd!

  5. Keeping track of baby names in Excel. That's good. I'd just write them down on a piece of paper. If the paper got lost and I forgot the name, it wasn't meant to be anyway. :)

    1. your way sounds very laid back, very zen - that's one thing I am not! my day job is an event planner so I tend to over-manage. The strange thing is that I'm a pantser not a plotter in my writing life!

  6. LOL. I think the definition of nerd has changed considerably since I was a kid. I never would have equated a music lover with a nerd. Interesting...

    1. Hi Kim. You're absolutely right. When I was a kid I would never have copped to being a nerd - it was something awful, something to be avoided. It was someone who did well in school and loved things that most kids didn't - math, science etc. Now with the Maker movement and stuff like that, kids see being a nerd - being passionate about things that are out of the ordinary - as a good thing. I like the change in definition!

  7. Hey Alex, There is nothing like a man who just get's you, right? I'd be nerdy for that any day. I'm not a silent writer either. I have certain songs depending on what I am working on to kick start each session. Put's me in the perfect creative mind set.

    1. me too! I make playlists for my WIPs and then add/subtract them as I progress. It probably says too much about me!

  8. I am one of those writers that absolutely NEEDS music to write. When I find a new rock band I get so excited! But I love all kinds of music too, and recently I've gotten into Japanese music. :D

I contributed to the Nerd Blog Hop as well. :)

    1. Hi Chrys
Oh yeah, music is a necessity for writing. But funnily enough, I have to have silence when I'm revising. Writers are so weird, right? Looking forward to visiting your blog.

  9. That movie looks hysterical.

Hmmm, nerdism. Art, funky mismatched clothes, books, horses, dogs. Yeah. I'm pretty sure I've been a nerd for a very long time.

    1. ditto. I'm glad nerdism is becoming more acceptable. and nerdism is just another term for 'out of the mainstream' and that is always a good thing.

  10. That movie looks SO funny! I hadn't even seen the trailer before. And yes--what a great soundtrack! I'm a total music nerd too. And I have to have music playing for certain scenes I write.
BTW thanks for joining my blogfest! :D

  12. I totally got that Charlotte Sometimes reference before you revealed! I felt pretty darn proud of myself.

Love music nerds. I married one :) :)

  13. You already know my nerd super power: I freaking love grammar. It's kind of pathetic how much I love grammar. I tell myself it's a way of asserting socio-economic supremacy and that I shouldn't be as drawn to it as much as I am, but what can I say. I think semicolons are the greatest.
